Northwest Fisheries Science Center
Celebrates 75 years of Innovative Science at the Montlake Facility

Highlighting the past...enlightening the future

The year 2006 is a milestone for NOAA Fisheries Service’s Northwest Fisheries Science Center. Since 1931, the Montlake Laboratory in Seattle, Washington has been at the forefront of groundbreaking scientific research, from originally helping fisherman harvest and process valuable seafood to conserving the living marine resources and learning about the ecosystems of the Pacific Northwest.
Goals
Our 75th anniversary is an exciting opportunity to showcase the past contributions and highlight our Center’s current and emerging, innovative research in fisheries and ecosystem science. The yearlong celebration will enhance public awareness of our fascinating history, people, and programs. Goals also include emphasizing key stakeholders, showing appreciation to staff, and strengthening educational partnerships.
Planned Events
Throughout the year, the Center will host several symposia, open houses and workshops showcasing our innovative contributions to fisheries science and celebrating the people at the heart of the Center. Tentative activities include:
April 3-5 Southern Resident Killer Whale Symposium
The Marine Mammal Program is co-sponsoring an international, public symposium focusing on emerging research on killer whales and how our science can help inform conservation and management actions. Topics include genetics, population dynamics, contaminants, vessel interactions, prey, noise effects, and habitat/distribution.
April 26 NOAA Kids’ Day
Bring your kids to work as NWFSC's Active Center Educators teach them what it's like to be a marine scientist, create fish prints, identify fish species, and examine real fish DNA.
Spring Puget Sound Ecosystem Initiative: "Sound" Science
October 4 Montlake 75th Anniversary Celebration and Dedication Ceremony
Fall Internal Grants Program: Highlights
Fall Salmon Symposium
December 12-13 1st Annual Science Symposium

Preserving our Heritage Resources
Through NOAA’s Preserve America Initiative Grant, the Center is working to preserve our heritage resources while making them more accessible to the public. Projects and activities include:
Educational Exhibit and Website
In collaboration with the Museum of Science and Industry (MOHAI), the Center is developing an interactive, educational exhibit highlighting our past scientific accomplishments as well as emerging innovations in fisheries science. The exhibit and corresponding educational website is designed to engage middle-school students by inviting them to "go back in time" with Montlake scientists as we reveal how they’ve solved some of the most pressing environmental challenges in the Pacific Northwest.
Oral History Project
We are also working with MOHAI to conduct an oral history project commemorating the people behind the science. These oral histories will tell our story of scientific progress and provide an educational opportunity to learn about the history of our Center through the voices of those who know it best. Stay tuned for video clips and excerpts of transcripts.
Archive historical documents
The Center just finished preserving approximately 200 historical publications (pre -1921). These publications provide important historical perspectives on NOAA's scientific work, and include a set of reports from the H.M.S. Challenger expeditions of 1873-1876 as well as a full set of U.S. Fish Commissioner annual reports spanning 1871-1921. Come check out this historic collection in the Montlake Library.

National Geodetic Survey Commemorative Marker
The NWFSC and NOAA Ocean Service's National Geodetic Survey are collaborating to design and establish a historic commemorative marker. The Montlake Laboratory would be the first historic site within NOAA Fisheries Service to receive this marker, which will provide a unique education and outreach tool to share our fascinating history with visitors during public tours and ongoing events. Future plans include hosting a marker dedication ceremony as part of our staff appreciation event.
Get Involved!
If you are interested in participating in the Center’s oral history project, giving a guest lecture for our speaker series at MOHAI, or want to learn more about our 75th Anniversary celebration, please contact at Vicky Krikelas or (206) 860-3263.
