Name NOAA’s New Fisheries Ship Competition
Deadline for submission: 12/15/06 - Washington, Oregon and California students in Grades 6-12 are invited to help NOAA chose a name for the research vessel being built to study the West Coast. The winning team will attend the keel laying ceremony in Moss Point, Mississippi, among other honors. Rules of the competition can be found at http://www.education.noaa.gov/shipname/ |

AMS Faculty Tour 6/15/06 - Twenty-five professors from Minority Serving Institutions around the country participating in the American Meteorological Society (AMS) Online Ocean Studies course learned about fisheries science during an afternoon program that included tours of the Environmental Assessment, Marine Pathogen, Fish Neurobiology and Development laboratories, and a visit to the on-site hatchery. |

Field trip at Mukilteo Research Station 5/26/06 - Fifty first and third graders from Lighthouse Elementary Cooperative learned about marine science with Center staff at the Mukilteo Research Station. Students visited four stations of hands-on activities that included: learning about the operation of boats, nets and dive gear; intertidal exploration; examining salmon prey, parasites and otoliths under a microscope; and dissecting fish! |

| 3/11/06 – Center staff presented three workshops on "Swim with the Salmon" at Seattle University during this one-day conference for 6th-8th grade girls to explore math, science and technology. |

| Islandwood – Sharing an Ocean Symposium |
| 3/4/06 – Center director Usha Varanasi presented on "Oceans and Human Health" at the "Sharing an Ocean: Living on the Pacific Rim?" symposium hosted by Islandwood and the Bainbridge Island Arts and Humanities Council. The purpose of the day of presentation was to have a conversation on how the Pacific Ocean has affected cultures as well as how humankind has affected the ocean. The program was open to all community members. |
