Innovation, Diversity and Opportunities
The Northwest Fisheries Science Center (NWFSC or Center) in Seattle, WA is one of six regional research centers of NOAA Fisheries, which is part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). In support of NOAA Fisheries' mission to conserve living marine resources and their habitat, more that 350 scientists and support staff conduct basic and applied research at the Center's six facilities in Washington and Oregon.
The NWFSC also establishes and maintains formal and informal agreements with school, universities, federal and state agencies, tribal groups, and other organizations to conduct collaborative research and provide educational opportunities. The research setting at the NWFSC and the arrangements with these agencies and organizations provide excellent career opportunities for visiting scientists; postdoctoral researchers; and high school, undergraduate, and graduate student interns. The NWFSC offers a wide variety of internships where interns meet and work with professional scientists; gain "hands on" experience and knowledge; and learn real-life job skills.
"For three decades we've strived to create a diverse, highly skilled, and effective workforce. The new faces we meet from these programs— from high school students to post–graduates— inject the Center with new ideas and their enthusiasm," said Acting Director John Stein, "It's very rewarding to mentor and develop these future scientists."
