Graphical model of trait evolution across a single generation. Unshaded curve illustrates how relative fitness (fitness divided by the mean fitness in the population) differs among individuals for a continuous trait X. The shaded curve illustrates the distribution of the trait in a population. The change in the mean value of the trait in the next generation (X) is the procduct of the absolute amount of additive genetic variance in the population and the slope of the fitness function (Lande 1979).
