FIGURE 3.22. Projected egg and larval production by age in female English sole. Egg and larval production estimates are based on fecundity estimates for Puget Sound English sole from Johnson et al. 1997 and reproductive success data for English sole from the Duwamish Waterway (contaminated) and Port Susan (reference) in Puget Sound from Casillas et al. 1991.a,b
a egg number = probability (p) of gonadal development (based on the data in this report) * fecundity. Fecundity is calculated using the formula log fecundity = -2.889 + 3.17 * log(length), determined from previous studies of egg production in Puget Sound English sole (Johnson et al. 1997).
b larval production = egg production * p(spawning) * p(fertile eggs) * p(normal larva). For Colvos Passage, p(spawning) = 0.9, p(fertile eggs) = 0.52 and p(normal larvae) = 0.74, based on previously determined values of these reproductive indicators for English sole from Port Susan, an uncontaminated reference site in Puget Sound (Casillas et al. 1991). For Hylebos Waterway, p(spawning) = 0.43, p (fertile eggs) = 0.44, and p(normal larvae) = 0.59, based on previously determined values for English sole from the Duwamish Waterway, an urban site with types and levels of contaminants similar to those in the Hylebos Waterway (Casillas et al. 1991).
