Data Managment Tools
We are developing data management tools to support the ISEMP pilot basin study. These tools currently include:
- A data dictionary describing all metrics used within ISEMP protocols
- A Protocol Manager used to track and update ISEMP protocols.
- MS Access database templates for storing and summarizing water quality, habitat, and fish abundance data (due to release in summer 2006)

Research, Monitoring, and Effectiveness Data Dictionary
---
The objective of the Research, Monitoring, and Effectiveness pilot project data dictionary was to identify and list all of the data elements documented within protocols identified for the ISEMP project. It was specifically designed to enable scientists performing watershed research, including fish monitoring, remote sensing (e.g. Landsat), and Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL), to deposit, view, and distribute data within a single source. The data dictionary consolidates biological indicators, classification variables, and habitat and physical characteristics into a single dictionary defining what information is required for each metric and variable within protocols. Technical specifications are used to describe the individual protocol data elements that make up the data dictionary. Download the dictionary (.pdf)
Protocol Manager
The Protocol Manager is a data management library tool which documents multiple data collection protocols used by habitat and biological monitoring teams. Protocol Manager will be useful in describing the various collection characteristics and methods that are relevant and pertain to specific data elements and indicators used by various protocols. The Protocol Manager will allow research scientists and data managers to enter detailed information for monitoring data protocols into the library, query and reference the documented protocols, and to generate reports and data entry forms. Protocol Manager is still being developed by the Bureau of Reclamation.
Automated Template Module (ATM) databases
We have developed interim Automated Template Modules, or ATMs, in MS Access to house and process water quality, habitat, and fish abundance data. These databases have been developed according to the Aquatic Resources Schema (Environmental Data Services, 2007). Although the ATMS were used to supply data to the Status, Trends, and Evaluation Monitoring (STEM) Databank developed by the Northwest Fisheries Science Center, the ATMs are designed to facilitate data management on ATM User Desktops.
These databases can be used by local agencies, research teams, and subbasin project teams to process data in standard formats for data entry and easily accommodate multiple agency reporting responsibilities. Additionally, standard metrics and analyses are automated, allowing staff to ask more advanced questions.
We are currently piloting ATMs for Habitat, Water Quality, Smolt Trapping, Snorkel/electrofishing, and Spawning Ground survey data collected in the Wenatchee Basin. Please contact us (hyperlink on website) for further information. The template version of the Water Quality ATM is available below and ATMs will be added to the website in fiscal year 2008.
