The Shop at Pt. Adams

Collage of pictures emphasizing the diversity of Pt. Adam's fleet and equipment.

Top Left: Action photo of the 'Sand Flea'. This PIT tag harvesting device, designed and constructed by Tom Campbell, was used to recover regurgitated PIT tags on the Caspian Tern colony on Rice Island, August 1998. The top 4 inch layer of the sandy colony substrate was lifted up the conveyor belt and dumped over the top on a series of screens as shown. The machine mechanically agitated the deposited material using a hydraulically motor powered from a backhoe (at left). Pit-tagged sized material filtered down to the bottom of three crowned screens, where the agitation process rolled them into a gutter along each side for recovery by magnet. Sand passed out through the bottom (Photo by RDL).

Top Right: Shows the Research Vessel Quinnat being lifted for dry dock and engine replacement at the new Astoria Port Facility in October of 2004 (photo by RDL).

Lower Left: Photo shows the research vessel Electric Barge with the RV Sculpin tied along side. A 2-coil PIT tag antenna is being positioned for attachment to the cod end of the large pair trawl (Photo by RDL).

Lower Right: Pt. Adams staff load a large pair trawl net onto the research vessel Murrelet.

With a full-time federal staff of four and three Pacific Fisheries employees, the shop at Pt. Adams is responsible for the maintenance and fabrication work that is necessary to keep the station's fleet of nineteen vessels functioning and safe. Shop personnel are often asked to tailor vessels for a particular research function and are "under the gun" to make sure that vessels, vehicles, and gear are ready by the start of each respective field season. In total "Pt. Adams" boasts nineteen boats ranging from 13 to 41 feet in length. Vessels include:

  • Kokanee
  • Coho
  • Chinoho
  • Keta
  • Pipefish
  • Muskrat
  • Sculpin
  • Shad
  • Tule
  • Tyee
  • Barricuda
  • Sabastos
  • Magister
  • Electric Barge
  • New Purse Seine Barge-currently unnamed
  • Siliqua
  • Murrelet
  • Quinnat
  • Rubber inflatable-unnamed
