Background
Ewann Berntson earned her bachelors in Zoology from the University of Washington (1991) and her doctorate in Biological Oceanography through the MIT/Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Joint Program (1998). Her scientific background includes the molecular evolution of corals and anemones, deep-sea and hydrothermal vent ecology and marine conservation biology. She is also interested in science education. She joined the NWFSC's CB Division in October 2000.
Current Research
As a research molecular geneticist Ewann investigates genetic patterns found in salmonids. Her current projects involve primarily steelhead and rainbow trout. She is analyzing reproductive success rates between hatchery-raised and naturally spawned individuals. She is also working with archival scale samples to look for genetic changes in populations over time. For something a little different, she is developing methods of molecular identification of species of deep-water corals occurring off the west coast of North America. She hopes to better understand their distribution patterns and eventually address population-level questions for these important members of the deep-sea community.
