Milestone one: Launching (not quite what you may think)

Most of us imagine a ship launch like this: A champagne bottle shatters against an imposing bow before the vessel slides majestically into the ocean, amid waving hands and bon voyages. In reality, nobody waves good-bye, because the ship is going nowhere. Unlike a space craft, a ship launches before it is ready to travel; the event actually marks the vessel's transition from dry land to water. A ship’s launch is significant, however, for both its symbolism and its very real drama; a vessel the size of the Bell M. Shimada makes quite a splash, as you can see from this slide show.

Outfitting begins while the ship gets its sea legs at a berth in the Mississippi shipyard. This work will be ongoing between now and early next year. NWFSC’s Vessel Operations Coordinator Kurt Gores will make regular visits and report on the vessel’s progress; watch the Center’s Web site for Bell M. Shimada Diary updates.
