Monster Seminar JAM - Is Invasion Biology Just Racism and Xenophobia Masquerading as Science?
Dr. Daniel Simberloff, Dept. of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, University of Tennessee.
Critics have assailed concern with the ecological and economic impacts of introduced species as a more or less thinly disguised form of racism, nativism, xenophobia, anti-Semitism, and/or Nazism. These charges, though ill-founded, are grist for the mill of forces working to weaken regulations regarding movement and management of introduced species and to dampen the growing response to the problems they pose. Motivations of these critics are obscure, but their analyses are never scientific. However, they are receiving increasing public attention.
