Monster Seminar JAM - What do seabirds do when they're away from land?
Dr. Robert E. Ricklefs, Department of Biology, University of Missouri-St. Louis
Pelagic seabirds are masters of the open ocean, but until recently we have had little insight into the way in which birds use this vast resource. Recent technological advances, including radio- and satellite-telemetry and on-bird data acquisition, are beginning to make at-sea activity accessible to us. The resulting patterns are forcing biologists to reconsider many aspects of seabird life histories, including their low reproductive rates and delayed maturation.
