Monster Seminar JAM - Size structured populations and individual variation: models and data for marine populations
Dr. Cathy Pfister, Department of Ecology and Evolution, Univeristy of Chicago
Although many marine populations are size structured and size based models are used to quantitatively describe them, individual differences that are independent of size may compromise the suitability of these models. I will discuss the nature of individual differences in several marine taxa and the effect this may have on population dynamics. I will also suggest some modeling alternatives. The work is motivated by the concern that variation among individuals may affect viability of the population as a whole.
