Abstract:
  1. Photoperiod schedules were used to control the onset of parr–smolt transformation in steelhead trout (Salmo gairdneri).
  2. Gill Na+–K+–stimulated ATPase activity was elevated in smolts exhibiting migratory behavior.
  3. ATPase activity was decreased and migration reduced when animals were subjected to temperatures of about 13°C or greater, or when the length of increasing photoperiods approximated that of the summer solstice (22 June).
