Abstract:

In 2000, the Northwest Fisheries Science Center (NWFSC) in Seattle, Washington, part of the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), initiated a bold new competitive program to provide seed money for cutting-edge research by Center scientists. This Internal Grants Program (IGP) had multiple objectives, including: advance professional development of junior scientists; re-invigorate more senior scientists whose research careers had stagnated; promote effective grant-writing skills; promote a diverse array of research projects; and promote interdisciplinary and inter-divisional research collaborations.
