The Environmental and Fisheries Sciences Division operates out of the Northwest Fisheries Science Center’s facilities in Seattle/Montlake, Manchester, and Newport.
What We Do
We assess and study ways to reduce natural and human-caused impacts on environmental and human health, and to promote sustainable wild-caught and hatchery-raised fisheries.
We examine environmental conditions and the impacts of chemical contaminants, marine biotoxins, and pathogens on fish, protected species, habitat quality, seafood safety, and human health.
We maintain the expertise to respond quickly to environmental emergencies from the release of toxic materials into the environment.

Ecotoxicology
We study the effects of toxic chemicals on the estuarine and marine species and their environments.
Environmental Chemistry
We examine the chemical processes that affect the health and ecology of aquatic animals.
Environmental Physiology
We study how cells and organs in fish and shellfish develop, work together, and interact with the external environment.
Fisheries Enhancement and Conservation
We design fish hatchery programs to support sustainable fisheries while also protecting wild salmon.
Aquaculture and Marine Fish and Shellfish Biology
We research the sustainability of natural marine fish populations and their artificial propagation for aquaculture.
