Alternative Marine Fish Feeds

Aquaculture is the fastest growing food producing sector in the world today, and demand for feed ingredients, especially fishmeal and oil, has increased dramatically in recent years. Alternative protein and oil sources are needed if further development of the aquaculture industry is to be sustained. Simultaneous replacement of both fishmeal and fish oil by terrestrial alternatives is problematic and yet to be achieved with marine fish. Researchers in the Aquaculture Program are currently investigating the potential of overcoming this difficulty by combining plant protein ingredients with novel fish protein meals produced from fishery processing waste.
