Determination of nutrient requirements

Plant proteins are known to be deficient in certain low molecular weight nutrients that are physiologically essential to marine fish and must be supplied through the diet. The successful transition of marine fish to more sustainable, plant-based feeds requires identifying these low molecular weight nutrients and determining dietary requirements for optimum growth. Researchers in the Aquaculture Program are currently studying the dietary requirement of taurine, an amino sulfonic acid, for sablefish Anoplopoma fimbria and investigating what physiological process are restricted or limited when dietary taurine levels fall below the requirement.
