Fish protein and oil are nutritious and valuable food commodities. In many areas of the world, including the United States, these commodities are not adequately recovered from fish processing operations due to a lack of appropriate technologies. Aquaculture feeds made from fresh ground fish support excellent growth. The concurrent use of fishery processing waste and plant proteins in alternative feeds for marine finfish is a current focus of research at NWFSC. It is envisioned that the use of such feeds would ultimately result in the net production of edible fishery products with plant ingredients and possibly fish oil as the only major inputs to the cycle.
