With increasing human population growth and commercial development, many different chemicals are being manufactured for use as industrial compounds, pharmaceuticals, pesticides and personal care products. These compounds can be used in high volumes in various applications and, as a result, are capable of entering marine environments via various routes. Most of these compounds, however, are not being monitored currently in environmental matrices so little is known about their occurrence, fate and transport, as well as their potential toxic effects. The Environmental Chemistry Program, together with the Ecotoxicology and Environmental Physiology Programs, are developing analytical methods and appropriate toxicological indicators of exposure and effects to address these data gaps in NOAA trust resources.
