Animal and Environmental Microbiology

Microbes affecting protected species, such as Pacific salmon, are a special concern. Our program continues to investigate and monitor microbial diseases affecting aquatic animals, as well as investigate the normal microbial community of marine fish.

Instead of causing disease, most microbes are involved in environmental processes. As the "base" of the marine food web and important consumers of dissolved nutrients, microbes respond to change as well as modulate aquatic ecosystems.
