Regardless of what type of antenna is installed, tag–reading range will be affected by size, construction material, and configuration of the antenna, as well as by electromagnetic interference (EMI).  Levels of EMI from both ambient sources and components of the monitoring system are discussed in this section.

We also cover antenna design considerations for the instream monitoring system, the most important of which are characteristics of the study stream or reach.

Finally, we discuss installation methods for securing antennas within a stream channel.

As discussed in the section on site selection, fish behavior can also impact the choice of position and type of antenna array deployed (Connolly et al. 2008).
